True — but "no test"
doesn't mean "no Finnish."
It means nobody is making sure you're ready — so it's entirely up to you whether you arrive prepared or arrive stuck. Here is what the brochures leave out.
The rules are tightening
In May 2026, Finland's Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment sent a draft law for consultation that would make proof of Finnish or Swedish a condition for the student residence permit itself — not just for citizenship years later. Citizenship already requires it. Start now and you stay ahead of rules that are moving earlier, not later.
Most jobs need Finnish
Almost every part-time job a student can realistically get — shop, café, warehouse, customer service, cleaning — requires basic spoken Finnish. Without it, you compete for a tiny pool of English-only roles against thousands in the same position. Even A2–B1 spoken Finnish multiplies your options.
Daily life is in Finnish
Registering with Migri, Kela and DVV, reading rental agreements, bus schedules, a doctor's appointment letter, talking to a landlord or pharmacist — almost none of it happens in English by default. Even an A1 foundation turns "I have no idea what this letter says" into "I can read this myself."
Friends, from week one
You don't need fluency to make friends — but you need something. A few sentences and the ability to follow a casual conversation are the difference between being included and being the person everyone quietly switches to English for. Tuition is real money (€6,000–€28,000/yr) — don't spend your first semester just figuring out how things work.
